Research in Dr. Allred’s laboratory primarily focuses on understanding the role of endogenous hormones and dietary compounds in influencing the development and progression of cancer.  Much of our work is in determining how estradiol alters tumor development.  In addition, we have numerous ongoing projects that are investigating natural compounds that mimic the actions of estrogens.  Often know as phytoestrogens, these compounds constitute an important class of dietary phytochemicals.
Primary focus of our research is in how estrogenic molecules alter the formation and growth of tumors of the breast and colon.  Using a two tiered approach of in vivo and molecular biology experiments we are able to identify the physiological actions of dietary compounds while defining the molecular mechanisms responsible for those actions.  Our overall goal is to develop prevention strategies for cancers of the colon and breast.

Areas of interest:

  • Ability of estradiol to prevent the formation of colon tumors
  • How phytoestrogens influence tumor growth
  • Identification of novel phytoestrogens
  • Using existing models to define the actions of  dietary phytochemicals
  • Understanding the complex interaction of gastrointestinal microflora and their host
